50 Ways to Kill a Goat

An old joke in Texas goes.... What happens when you put three goats in a sealed oil barrel?? ANSWER: One will die, one will escape and one will be just fine.

The moral of this story is that while hardy, goats are sometimes too smart for their own good. They get into trouble in the most amazing ways. Here are a few examples.

1. Have its head get caught in the fence and die of exposure, fright or predation. (Never use sheep fence)

2. Let a kid fall into a deep water trough and drown. (Put a cement block in the trough so they can climb out)

3. Inject penicillin directly into a vein. (aspirate the syringe before you inject)

4. Separate a newborn kid from its mom. (tag everyone at birth)

5. Don't notice when a kid doesn't get any colostrum.

6. Have a loose gate or fence panel fall on it.

7. Allow the mom to roam too far with a too young kid at side.

8. Have a sudden snowstorm drive the herd inside leaving a too young kid out in it.

9. Allow a doe with newborn kids to spend the night out of the barn and too close to the fox den.

10. Allow loose baling twine or worse, baling web to lay out in the field. Horns get tangled and goats strangled.

11. Inject goats with a bad vaccine.

12. Let the goats into the corn bin.

13. Allow the big bucks to stay with the young kid bucks.

14. Let your guard dog run out of feed.

15. Have the neighbors get hungry for cabrito.

16. Let a bunch of kids pile up in a warm, dark, small, airless place for the night like a small animal carrier.

17. Have all the goats pile into the barn and lay on top of the best kid.

18. Have the second best kid get tangled in the feeder.

19. Drop a 1500 pound bale of hay on a goat.

20. Put out a new bale of particularly good hay after weeks of mediocre ones.

21. Put your hand through the birth canal while trying to pull a kid.

22. Let your horse step on a newborn kid.

23. Let the goats eat off the pile of big baled alfalfa and have the top bale fall after eating out the one under it.

24. Let a goat get stuck down a badger hole.

25. Let a goat get tangled in an electric fence.

26. Have a goat react to a vaccine.

27. Run a panicked kid over with a 4 wheeler or a car.

28. Try to mother up a kid with the wrong mom by isolating them both together.

29. Let the goats stay out in a thunderstorm under a tree.

30. Have a bunch of goats take refuge in a cave during snowstorm and get buried.

31. Have a reluctant mom you've tied up get away and get the string get caught around the nursing kids' neck

32. Put too many goats in a trailer.

33. Put a culvert too close to a fence and have a playful kid slip off on the fence side and get stuck.
