Presence: Applicant must have owned cashmere goats, shown cashmere goats in CaPrA sanctioned shows, and been actively breeding cashmere goats for at least three years.

Classing: Applicant must have participated in fiber classing in one of the following ways within the last five years. "Full Session" is defined as a pre- planned curriculum with handouts lasting a minimum of 4 hours, preferably with a final exam at the end. Certificates of completion will be required for past workshops.

  • Participated in a minimum of three full session cashmere fiber workshops with Hugh Hopkins, Terry Sim, Doug Winters, Bev Foard or any CaPrA certified judge (currently Bob Buchholz, Joe David Ross, James Barton, Bron Schuetze and Kris McGuire).
  • Participated in a minimum of two full session cashmere fiber workshops as described above and two full days on-farm grading with a CaPrA certified judge, Terry Sim or James Barton.
  • Participated in a minimum of two full session cashmere fiber workshops as described above and worked beside a fleece judge at a major competition with at least 30 fleeces entered.

Membership: Applicant must be a members in good standing of at least one of the following: CaPrA, any regional cashmere association (currently ECA, NWCA, TCA and the Canadians) or Cashmere America for the past three years.

Show Experience: Applicant must verify that he/she has exhibited cashmere goats for competition in at least three CaPrA sanctioned shows that had at least 12 cashmere goats exhibited. For those applicants living more than 150 miles from established shows, then any one of the following alternatives can be substituted:

  • Applicant is recommended by the board of directors of a regional cashmere association.
  • Applicant has exhibited or judged cattle, sheep, horses, dogs or other goat breeds in at least 4 shows within the past three years.
  • Applicant presents a petition with at least four current independent (non-family, employee or partner of the applicant) cashmere members and breeder's signatures stating they feel said applicant has the potential and sincere interest in being a cashmere goat judge.

Judging Workshop: A potential judge, after meeting the above requirements must attend a regional judging workshop and must pass with a minimum of 80% on each section as follows:

  • Place at least three classes of four to five cashmere goats.
  • Give oral reasons for at least one of these classes
  • Answer a checklist questionnaire for at least one of the classes.

Recertification: Recertification of the approved regional judges will take place two years from the date of approval. If the judge has judged at least five CaPrA sanctioned shows within the two year period, recertification will be automatic.

Ethics: Approval of judges will be revoked if any one of the following ethics rules are broken:

  • If certification of judgeship is used in personal advertising or for the promotion of said judge's breeding program.
  • If said judge seeks judgeship of a show or approaches fair officials for the opportunity to judge. Fair officials should not be under any pressure as to whom they might select as their cashmere judge

Certified Judges List: CaPrA will provide an entire list of approved regional judges and a list of the CaPrA certified judges. Approved regional judges will be considered for promotion to CaPrA certified judge after serving two years as a regional judge.
